India may have already overtaken China as the world’s most populous country, which would be a major shift. According to estimates from the World Population Review (WPR), India’s population at the end of 2022 was 141,7 crore. Official announcements from China put the number at 141.2 billion on January 17 after the country had its first drop in population since the 1960s. This is an increase of just over 50 lahks.
India is expected to have the fastest-growing major economy in the world because half of its population is under the age of 30. According to the United Nations, the target date was intended to be reached later this year. As of January 18th, the World Population Review estimates that there are 142.3 billion people living in India. Population growth in India has slowed, although WPR projects it will continue to rise until at least 2050.

Economist Eric Zhu of Bloomberg said that China’s current recession will be a “growth-crushing headwind for a long time” in his report from January 18. The National Statistics Bureau said that in 2022, China’s population fell by 8.5% from the previous year.
