On the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast (via Mediaite), Quentin Tarantino emphasized how movie stars have been lost to “Marvel-ization of Hollywood.” and how MCU actors aren’t truly movie stars.
“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.” he said.
During the interview, Quentin Tarantino clarified that he doesn’t dislike Marvel movies, only the fact that they’re the only products Hollywood is producing nowadays.
“Look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid, There’s an aspect that if these movies were coming out when I was in my twenties, I would totally be fucking happy and totally love them. I mean, they wouldn’t be the only movies being made. They would be those movies amongst other movies. But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not quite as excited about them.” he said.
He further added that what upsets him is that they are the entire manifestation of this current era of cinema.
“My only axe to grind against them is they’re the only things that seem to be made. And they’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them… And so it’s just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There’s not really much room for anything else. That’s my problem.”
Recently, the director stated that he would never direct a Marvel movie, stating “you have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.”
Further to that, in another podcast, Tarantino stated that we are living in the worst era of Hollywood films in all of history.
As a response to Tarantino’s remarks, a rising actor in MCU, Simu Liu, has spoken up and voiced his disagreement with the director, saying that he doesn’t get to point their nose at me.
Here’s my take on the Director’s comments:
As much as I agree with Tarantino’s comments, for the most part, I also believe it isn’t necessarily true, or applicable to certain actors who have played major roles in the realm of marvel. Who? Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johanson, and Chris Evans is the definitive answer. They’re the actors that can pull the audience into watching their movies, and that sums it up. I mean who is a movie star, if he can’t get his audience to watch his movies?
