James Cameron, the creator behind the Terminator trilogy and the man who launched the franchise with Terminator 1 (1984) and Terminator: Judgement Day (1991), may have disclosed new intentions- as in reboot of the franchise following a string of failures, recently Terminator: Dark Fate.
On the Smartless podcast, Cameron discussed the messages and themes in his films. “Well, the Avatar films are about the environment; I’m not dealing with AI,” he said. “If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try and to launch that franchise again (reboot) – which is in the discussion, but nothing has been decided – I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy.”
The original intention for Terminator: Dark Fate was for it to be the first in a trilogy. However, plans were put on hold after the film’s poor reception at the box office. The series has had a habit of landing in the fire after a rocky beginning, and this is the second time in a row that it has happened. Originally, Terminator: Genisys was meant to have two sequels. Clearly, that did not work out as planned.
While we may have to wait a while for the reboot of Terminator franchise, fans of the science fiction franchise won’t have to for long to get their hands on the next video game. The game, currently unnamed but working title “Terminator Survival Project,” is set sometime between “Judgment Day” and the beginning of John Connor’s resistance movement.
