Our old avengers are gone; they’ve passed their legacy on to the next generation; apart from Thor who’s still around and embarks on a journey of self-discovery after everything he’s endured, “from the death of his mother to the destruction of Asgard, to failing to take revenge on Thanos”. It has been a long road for Thor, and he has fought depression for five years, until he reunited with his mother, who opened his eyes again and encouraged him to be the best he could be. So that’s what we’re gonna see in Thor Love and Thunder.
Since Thor Love and Thunder trailer hit, fans of marvel and Thor are eager to see Thor in shape and reconcile with his old flame Jane, who will return as Mighty Thor. While it’s unclear how Jane gains Thor’s powers and becomes worthy, we can assume that Marvel is adapting Jane’s breast cancer storyline from the comics. Furthermore, we see Russell Crowe as Zeus, Tess Thompson as Valkyrie, Taika Waitita as Korg and the first appearance of Gorr: the god butcher who is portrayed by none other than Christian Bale.
From what we can gather from the trailer, Thor seems about to face his assumingly worst opponent/foe: Gorr: The God Butcher, who also had a tragic past, just like Thor. Considering both gods have a bitter past, it will be interesting to see what their conflict turns into. However, meanwhile, let’s revisit Thor’s character once again from the very beginning to become prepared for Thor Love and Thunder.
Movies to Watch Before Thor Love and Thunder :
1. Thor (6 May 2011)
As a matter of personal opinion, Thor remains one of the best-underrated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This film paves the way for Thor’s introduction and the realm of Asgard, accompanied by Odin, Frigga, and Loki, who is rather bitter towards his elder brother, Thor, who has yet to fully mature and evolve. Specifically, the movie explores the concept of realms for the first time in the MCU, with Frost giants opposing Thor. It also introduces Jane Foster (Thor’s old flame) who has a major role.
2. The Avengers (May 4, 2012)
It seems like things didn’t end up the way we expected after the Thor film ended. Thor returns to earth to capture Tesseract and his brother, Loki. However, Loki has already had a deal with Thanos and has been corrupted by Mindstone, resulting in a Chitauri army going on the march. To fight the army, Thor teams up with the Avengers; a new band formed by SHIELD. Regardless, It was a defining movie for Marvel Studios at the time. After seeing how The Avengers was received by the audience, Marvel Studios decided to expand their universe.
3. Thor: The Dark World (November 8, 2013)
In spite of being the poorest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor The Dark World has continued to play a major role in future films; such as Avengers Endgame, which relates to its events. The film begins when Thor meets Jane, who was associated with the “Aether” alias for the reality stone. As Thor takes her to Asgard to receive medical attention, Malekith abducts her to retrieve the power of the aether. Thor must face Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves and the person responsible for his mother’s loss, as well as his brother Loki who assumed death.
4. The Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1, 2015)
In the aftermath of Thor; The Dark World, Thor reunites with his teammates the Avengers to try to retrieve the sceptor that HYDRA had stolen. Just when everything appears to be going smoothly for the Avengers, Tony stark’s failed creation; Ultron shows up and turns everything upside down.
Wanda Maximwoff; the product of the Tesseract, enchants the Avengers with their worst nightmares, in which Thor senses the doom of Asgard and the Infinity Stones. As danger looms, Thor helps Vision become born, who later plays a key role in Avengers Infinity War; the greatest threat the Avengers have ever faced.
5. Thor: Ragnarok (November 3, 2017)
After Age of Ultron, it seems that Marvel decided to completely change Thor’s character tone, as both of his films weren’t well received. So, with Thor Ragnarok, Marvel broke new ground and offered us a comic version of Thor that was a huge success and became one of the top MCU movies.
6. Avengers: Infinity War (April 27, 2018)
The Avengers Infinity War picks up where Thor Ragnarok left off. It’s already too late for Thor, and as if that wasn’t bad enough, Loki dies at the hands of Thanos.
This is Avengers Infinity War, which was hinted at in Age of Ultron, and which Thor and Tony glimpsed about. It’s an absolute Marvel masterpiece that’s a fan feast for marvel fans. The biggest crossover in cinema history as well as in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with an unexpected ending, that no one could have predicted. The Avengers lose, Thor loses, Thanos wins…
7. Avengers: Endgame (April 26, 2019)
The culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers Endgame, a tale of how the Avengers succeed in their mission and vindicate their undying purpose. It is an experience that must be witnessed in the theater and is a film that leaves you thrilled, excited, and emotional, which collectively makes it a masterpiece and concludes the Infinity Saga.
Thor stays depressed over his loss for five years until Hulk, his fellow Avenger, encourages him to return to the fight. As Thor travels through time to The Dark World, he meets Frigga, his lost mother, who empowers him to embrace his true identity.
