Star wars is one of the biggest and most nostalgic movie franchises of all time. 1977 marked the year when Lucas released the first Star Wars film, which amazed audiences with its stunning visuals and characters, ultimately becoming the highest-grossing movie of the 70s. People who grew up in the 70 still experience nostalgic feelings when they are reminded of the star wars classics. This is why the films have provided so much entertainment and joy to our forefathers, leaving them awed ever since. It is fortunate that we still can watch these classics and continue pursuing the franchise that is deemed to be Epic. So, what stops you from watching?
Before you embark on the star wars franchise, it is imperative to know ” The First Three-Star wars films” are cornerstones and the gist of the entire franchise. Their core and essence is unparalleled and no other sequel or prequel has still reached the Original Trilogy standards.
- Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope
- Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
- Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
Regardless, The viewing order of Star Wars is something we have to talk about. We have three orders to watch Star Wars :
- Release Date Order
- Chronological Order
- The Chrono-Release Order ( The one I personally created )
You can enjoy the franchise in whatever way you want. Everyone share different tast
Let’s take a look at the Star Wars Movies In Order Of Release:
- Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
- Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
- Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
- Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Star Wars Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
- Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
- Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
- Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
- Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
- Star Wars Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Many have argued about the chronological order versus the release date order and still, star wars cults argue about it.
Let’s see Star Wars Movies in Chronological Order :
- Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace
- Star Wars Episode II – Attack of the Clones
- Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
- Solo: A Star Wars Story
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
- Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope
- Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
- Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
- Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens
- Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi
- Star Wars Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker
One of the primary reasons for the dispute over chronological viewing order is it ruins the biggest plot twist in the star wars franchise and the audience may not enjoy one of the epic moments in cinema history. Even so, newbies have watched them chronologically and got themselves ruined by the plot twist. But, I don’t want you to commit the same mistake as they did. It’s an experience you should not miss and here’s the solution for that.
The thing with the star wars franchise is, you can neither watch it in release date order nor in chronological order. It’s quite a dilemma I thought about it to mend and then I figured it out this way.
Best Order to Watch Star Wars Movies
- Episode I – The Phantom Menace
- Episode II – Attack of the Clones
- Episode IV – A New Hope
- Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
- Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
- Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
- Episode VII – The Force Awakens
- Rogue One – A Star Wars Story
- Episode VIII – The Last Jedi
- Solo – A Star Wars Story
- Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker
What I did was just a little tweak. I pulled “Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” and set it following “Episode VI – Return of the Jedi”. Wondering why? first, when you watch the originals, it makes you curious about what might’ve happened after Episode 2. You kind of get a sense of how things might’ve gone based on their dialogues. Ultimately, it enhances your viewing experience exciting over Episode 3. Second, it preserves one of the biggest movie plot twists of all time, which would be spoiled if you went chronologically.
As a guy who is a fan of star wars, this is the best order to watch star wars movies that I would recommend for newcomers. It will be stunning and will be one of your favorite franchises for sure.
All the movies are available on Disney Plus.
